Working In Uncertainty

About the author

Matthew Leitch is a consultant, author, researcher, and educator specialising in managing risk/uncertainty in everyday situations at work, making 'risk management' an integral part of good management. He tutors business people in related skills. Matthew lives and works (under uncertainty of course) from his home in Surrey, south of London, in the United Kingdom.

Matthew has had a varied career so far, but has been an independent consultant since 2003. Before that he worked as a consultant and auditor with PricewaterhouseCoopers, after training as an accountant and auditor at Fraser Russell. Before that he developed software and wrote technical marketing literature.

The many organizations that have sent people to educational events by Matthew are too numerous to mention, as are the many who have bought his books, but Matthew's consulting and in-house educational clients have included: British Telecommunications, the Department for Communities and Local Government, The Department for Transport, UBS, Oxfordshire County Council, Benfield, Wates, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, BP, and the Devon and Cornwall Police Authority.

He also lectures and supervises dissertations at the University of Southampton.

Matthew's books so far are these:

  • "Intelligent internal control and risk management" is a large book packed with fresh thinking. It works within the language of risk and control but contains a lot of specific material on powerful controls.

  • "A pocket guide to risk mathematics: key concepts every auditor should know" offers auditors (and others) an easy way to get a deep conceptual understanding of 'risk' related mathematics and learn how to spot dodgy practices.

In 2007, Matthew joined the RM/1 (risk management) committee at the British Standards Institution as a co-opted expert. He helped to draft BS 31100:2008, the code of practice on risk management, and more recently worked very hard on the revised and expanded version of that document, BS 31100:2011. He has been awarded two Distinguished Service Certificates by BSI, and they're not given out often.

He also contributed suggestions to an APM publication on prioritizing project risks and is currently assisting in work to revise the Project Risk Assessment and Management guide published by the APM.

In addition to his commercial activities, Matthew is a bit of a reformer. Most of his reform efforts are focused on risk management, but there are some other themes.

Hundreds of people receive notification of new publications every month. They include company directors, heads of finance, of internal audit, of risk management, and of internal control, professors, and other influential authors and researchers.
